NYC Votes condemns the recent spate of violence targeting Asian Americans & Pacific Islanders (AAPI). These attacks have caused tremendous pain, anger, and fear in New York City and throughout the country. We stand in solidarity with the AAPI community.
The 1.2 million Asian & Pacific Islander New Yorkers deserve to live free of fear in the city we all call home. Diversity is our city’s greatest strength. Our communities thrive on the vibrant contributions by people of different races, backgrounds, and ethnicities. Any attack on the AAPI community is an attack on the beating heart of our city and the values we hold most dear.
As the city agency dedicated to increasing participation in our elections, we know the power of making our voices heard—both at the ballot box and in our everyday lives. In moments like these, we cannot remain silent. We must wholeheartedly reject the rhetoric and misinformation that has led to this violence, and we must stand up for those who may be unable to stand up for themselves. This past year has demonstrated the power of language to both upset and uplift. Words become actions. This is a moment that calls on all of us to speak out and Stop Asian Hate.
This June, we will have the opportunity to elect city officials who can lead our city out of multiple crises and represent the needs of all New Yorkers. Until then, we encourage you to join a bystander intervention training or visit www.nyc.gov/stopcovidhate to learn more.
